Alpha set to advance
published: Monday | March 20, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

THE CONVENT of Mercy Academy, Alpha, have all but booked their place in the semi-finals of the division two Jamaica Hockey Federation Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association Under-16 girls competition.

Alpha will play against Excelsior in their final preliminary round game at the Mona Hockey Field starting at 1:00 p.m today.

The game is one that Alpha can afford to lose, but one which still offers slim hopes for an Excelsior berth in the final four.

Excelsior only have one point from their previous games and need to catch Alpha, who are on four.

While the math adds up to the points equalling out if Excelsior manage to win the game, they have a six-point goal difference to make up.

The successful team coming out of that game will play against Papine, who have already made it to the big four stage.

At two o'clock Holy Childhood will go up against St. Hugh's in a do-or-die battle. Any team that comes up with a victory in this game will make it to the semi-final scheduled for tomorrow, where they will then have to play against Mona, who also previously booked their place.

In division one where things are still wide open for a number of teams, Wolmer's Girls will continue to drive towards a semi-final berth when they play against group leaders Queen's High.

Queen's have 10 points from four games, but play against a dangerous Wolmer's unit that have already accumulated six points from their two games and look likely semi-finalists.

That game begins at three o'clock.

Simultaneously there will be another division one game between Immaculate and Excelsior.

Excelsior have only three points from three outings, but will be hoping to grab a valuable three points against minnows Immaculate.
