Problems with Customs
published: Monday | March 20, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I CAN'T for the life of me understand who or what directs policies at our ports of entry. Jamaica must be the only country in the world where if you fly in from Miami, the aircraft gets back to Miami before you clear Customs.

I wonder if anyone shares the utter indignation I suffered on my recent trip to Jamaica with my five- year-old daughter.

The customs officer sat on his rear end and turned out our belongings, then left us to repack.

I was charged for carrying disposable pants for my ailing mother.

The fact that I was travelling with a five-year-old for over 20 hours did not matter and, to add insult to injury, I had to wait a further 16 minutes for a cashier to be found to cash the money to pay my 'fine' which, incidentally, has a rate of exchange that is so low it's found nowhere else in Jamaica.

As they say, Jamaica no problem.

I am, etc.,
