Truly a miracle
published: Wednesday | December 28, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

'OPERATION MIRACLE' is truly a miracle, so said our country's ambassador to Cuba. One Jamaican patient who was able to see again after an eye operation said the experience was like being in heaven. 'Operation Miracle' is a project headed by Fidel Castro, president of Cuba, and his counterpart Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president.

Under 'Operation Miracle' thousands of visually impaired people are receiving eye surgery for free in Cuba. These people who have regained their eyesight will be able to see families and friends. And what better time of the year? This Christmas should be their brightest.

This project is a government to government co-operation between Cuba and Venezuela. Cuban doctors operate for free and Venezuela pays for the flight, food and accommodation for the patients.

In 10 years, 4.5 million people will benefit from 'Operation Miracle'. Kudos to both presidents who had the 'vision' to implement 'Operation miracle', by doing good to others. These two leaders should be honoured for their humanitarian act, unlike others who invade foreign lands, killing innocent civilians with their bombs and bullets, then boast of their military might.

I am, etc.,

ROY CRUICKSHANK

Port Morant, St. Thomas
