Support for medical visit
published: Wednesday | December 28, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to express appreciation to the following companies and persons who, through their financial contributions or support, made the recent visit of Professor Jacob Langer to Jamaica a complete success.

Jamaica Medical Foundation, the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica, Jamaica Broilers Group Ltd., Tastee Limited, Keith Duncan, Donna Duncan-Scott, Mrs. Beverly Needham and Dr. Sonia Thomas.

Professor Langer, along with Jamaican paediatric surgeons, operated on children with Hirschsprung's disease on December 19 at the University Hospital of the West Indies. At least two children per month require surgery for the disease in Jamaica and by performing corrective surgery (The Langer Procedure), entirely through the anus, the child can be left with no scar and is out of hospital in two days.

The entire Jamaican paediatric surgery community is appreciative for this opportunity to have learnt this new procedure from the person who popularised it, knowing fully well that it was made possible by the support of fellow Jamaicans.

I am, etc.,

NEWTON DUNCAN

Senior Lecturer in Surgery

University of the West Indies

COLIN ABEL

Senior Paediatric Surgeon

Bustamante Children's Hospital
