Farmer stabbed to death, man shot dead in 'St Bess'
published: Monday | July 5, 2004

By Claudine Housen, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

ONE MAN is dead and another is in police custody following a dispute over money in St. Elizabeth, on Saturday.

The dead man has been identified as 20-year-old farmer, Howard 'Rucktu' Smith, of a Prospect district address in St. Elizabeth. Reports are that Smith was at home, on Saturday, when at about 6:30 p.m. he received a visit from his cousin, 24-year-old Lincoln 'Cojack' Denis, also a farmer in the district.

The men began talking and soon a dispute over money emerged during which a piece of stick was used to hit Denis on the hand. Denis, it is alleged, retaliated by using a knife to stab Smith in the region of the chest. Smith was taken to the Black River Hospital where he later died. Denis has since been taken into custody and the New Market police are investigating.

In another part of the parish, 39-year-old mechanic, Dean Tomlinson, was gunned down in White Hall District.

Reports are that at about 9:45 p.m. Tomlinson went to his sister's shop to attend to three men who had entered the establishment. Following his entrance, residents allege that explosions were heard and three men were seen running from the shop.

Minutes later Tomlinson was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Black River police are investigating.
