Hugh
Shearer is Dead
By Kenrick Josephs
Jamaicas
third Prime Minister and veteran Politician, Hugh Lawson Shearer died
at approximately 9 am today at his Hope Pastures home in Kingston.
It is reported that
Mr. Shearer suffered from Alzheimers disease, and four weeks ago
had a mild stroke. Some years before, he underwent heart bypass surgery.
The former trade unionist
was born in Martha Brae, Trelawny on May 18, 1923. He attended St. Simons
College as a Parish Scholarship winner. He was appointed Prime Minister
in 1967 following the sudden death of Sir Donald Sangster.
Shearer piloted Jamaica
(1967-72) through its most productive years overseeing the establishment
of three new alumina refineries and three large convention hotels. These
greatly contributed to Jamaicas mining and tourism industries.
He leaves wife Denise
Eldemire-Shearer who unfortunately lost her mother last week.
