THE EDITOR, Sir:
This is a reply to the letter printed on Thursday, July 1, "Shame on Digicel!"
The writer complained that her daughter joined a chat room after receiving an advertisement-text message on her phone and they were both amazed by the "high level of sexual content and gross indecency that came across by scores".
What the writer failed to realise however was that in no way can Digicel be held responsible for that.
The company can advertise in any way they please as long as it is legal. I don't see how they can be liable for the content and the way in which the product/service is being used.
Secondly, her daughter went to the chat room of her own free will, regardless of her age (10 years-old) and she chose the specific room that she joined. I would assume that not all chat rooms convey this type of content.
Thirdly, Digicel clearly states when advertising certain services, DigiChat being one of them, that "this service is governed by the terms and conditions of your phone service. Users of this service agree not to use this forum to defraud abuse, annoy, threaten or harass any other person" or something to that effect depending on the service being promoted.
To the writer, when you gave your 10 year-old daughter a cellular phone "for obvious reasons", whatever that means, you also gave her full access to the real world. Don't blame Digicel for the actions of your daughter.
I am, etc.,
