Respect our women
published: Monday | July 5, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS IS in response to recent articles regarding the breakdown of the Jamaican family and society.

In Jamaica, there is a high rate of incarceration of men. Few men are attending university, church, or are willing to get married in order to start a family.

However, who can blame these men if they decide to sleep with a few women before settling into a common law relationship? They claim that if they do not get sex from Mary they can get it from Jane.

I do believe however that for the society to move forward, women need to take control of their bodies and their actions. Most men appear not to be able to control their urges, so women need to take responsibility by making a stand for what is right. They should abide by the laws of chastity and wait until they are in the institution of marriage before engaging in sexual activities.

In 1 Corinthians 7:9 it says that it is better to marry than to burn. For a man to respect a woman, she has to respect herself first. If a man and a woman are in love, they should prove their love through marriage and not through sex. With this effort, a foundation can be created whereby family life will become the forerunner in establishing a better Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
