Truth Heals
published: Monday | July 5, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE WIRED Counselling Agency's conference labelled "Sexual Brokeness, Truth and Healing" which was held at the PCJ Auditorium over the weekend of May 21 - 23 was, for those of us who attended, a real eye-opener.

There were three presenters/ speakers who all shared from their personal experiences giving testimony to the fact that truth indeed heals.

The first topic, The Pain of Divorce, was dealt with by Pastor Trevor Edwards, himself a divorcee, who spoke of one's denial, the resulting feelings of rejection, accepting and recognising who one really is and taking responsibility when confronted by divorce.

On Day 2, there was a workshop dubbed "Ministering to the Homosexual" through which individuals including pastors, counsellors, other church workers including lay persons and tertiary students were guided in ministry designed for working with and counselling homosexuals, an area largely neglected by the church.

On Saturday night the speaker, Daryl Foster, an Atlanta-based pastor, spoke clearly from his own experience and position as one truly converted by the Holy Spirit from a gay lifestyle. His explicit delivery made a profound impact on those of us who heard him. At the end of his presentation his invitation to come forward for prayer of deliverance was answered with urgency by many persons in attendance.

For the final night, Evangelist Marjorie Dyer spoke on the topic "Healing the scars of pre-marital sex" in which she shared from her own experience.

One common fact highlighted by the presenters was that while they had been going through their experiences of sexual brokeness and turned to the church for help, the church either could not or was unwilling to deal with the confidence (truth) shared. This resulted in a worsening of their situations and left them with feelings of alienation and entrapment. It was therefore wonderful to see God using young people to minister in this way.

I am, etc.,
