THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHAT A pre-keh in the Jamaica Labour Party?!
The reformists have been actively lobbying for changes in the leadership of the JLP. In less than 12 months they got the chairmanship, the general secretary position, and two deputy leadership positions. However, that was never enough, the coveted prize was the undisputed leadership of the party.
Young, brash and impatient, the reformists went for the jugular, by destabilising the party in defying the leader on a number of occasions.
The Montego Bay meeting or non-meeting and subsequent actions by both the traditionalists and reformists resulted in Mr. Seaga's (un)timely announcement of retirement.
Where does this leave the party? Who will enter the ring for leadership of the party come Conference in November? Is there a role for Mr. Seaga post-conference? Who will be the leader of the Opposition? Will it be Audley Shaw or will it be Bruce Golding? Is there another twist to this saga, another power struggle, another power hungry prospect(s) entering the race? These are questions that should be answered by the party and these questions must be thoroughly thought through leading up to November's conference. For the sake of Jamaica we hope that the JLP will get it right this time.
I am, etc.,
