McLean shoots for better fields
published: Wednesday | September 24, 2003

By Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

LINNEL McLean, president of the Trelawny Football Association, will be looking to improve youth programmes and facilities for the sport in the parish during his new tenure.

In the last two terms the focus, according to McLean, was to get teams into the National Premier League and to further improve the facilities for the sport in the parish.

"We have been successful with our goal of getting teams into the NPL as we now have two Village United and Invaders. What we still have to do is to upgrade the fields some more," said McLean who is serving his fourth term in office.

"For this term we have set ourselves the target of improving the youth programme as well as to develop women's football," McLean said.

UNOPPOSED

Businessman McLean was on Saturday re-elected unopposed to the post of president at the annual general meeting of the Trelawny Football Association held in the parish.

Joining McLean on the parish's football executive are first deputy president Anthony Cornwall, who like the president, was returned unopposed. Dean Innis is the second deputy president, Lawkins will serve as treasurer while Carol Gentles and Marlene Brown are the secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

Freelance journalist, referee and football coach Steve Petgrave was installed in the position of public relations officer.

An understandably pleased McLean, who previously served in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) and the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) said his re-election was a sign that his work was appreciated.

"I think my re-election says that the people appreciate the work that I have done. I try to build stability and to get the parish association to have a focus so I guess that is what they see," said the 50-year-old McLean who replaced former president Rory Nugent.

Upon replacing Nugent, McLean served one one-year term before his stints were extended to two years.

McLean expressed confidence in the new executive that he will have to work with in the present term.

"I think that it is a blend of new people, ones who have been there before and some of whom are returning. It is a team which I believe will work well together. Of course we know we have our work cut out for us but we will successfully tackle the key issues that we have to deal with."
