Old Harbour stop Garvey Maceo
published: Wednesday | September 24, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU: GARVEY MACEO ended Old Harbour's impressive start to the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus rural area daCosta Cup schoolboy's football competition yesterday with a 1-0 win in their Zone I top of the table clash at Soya Oval.

Ashton Bennett's goal was enough to push Garvey Maceo to the top of the points standings with 13 from five matches, one more than Old Harbour, the Ben Francis Knock out champions.

Old Harbour's first loss of the season left five schools with perfect records as the first round comes to and end this afternoon when an additional 19 games will be played.

Former champions Munro College surged to the top of Zone E with a 6-0 thrashing of Newell High, passing an idle Black River High while St Elizabeth Technical stayed in third place after drawing 2-2 with Maggotty.

Holmwood Technical moved into second place in Zone G after edging Mile Gully 1-0. They trail leaders Christiana High who were held 0-0 by Knox College who are making a bid to contest for one of the two Inter-Zone places from the zone.

Meanwhile, Alston became the latest school to withdraw from the competition after failing to fulfill their commitment against Spalding yesterday.

The Gleaner understands that the action was taken due to indiscipline among the players on a team that was tied for sixth place on one point with Albert Town.

A meeting is to be held today to sort out the zone and also to set a date for the outstanding game between Knox and Holmwood.

In Zone A, last season's beaten finalists Williams Knibb spanked St James High 3-0 at the Elleston-Wakeland Community Centre as former Cornwall College coach Steve Bucknor took over the reigns of the team.

Bucknor, who won two titles with Cornwall in the early 1980s, could not prevent the team from crashing to their fourth straight loss and is yet to score a goal.

Oniel Graham in the 31st, Terry Haughton in the 42nd and Neville Coleman in the 54th minute were the scorers for the Trelawny team who moves into second place in Zone A behind Cornwall College.
