St George's surprise DQ
published: Wednesday | September 24, 2003

By LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

ST GEORGE'S COLLEGE continued the upsets in Manning Cup action when they defeated Donald Quarrie 2-0 at Emmet Park yesterday.

At the start of the game George's coach Andre Bell said "they (Donald Quarrie) have been playing well, we want to see if we can create an upset".

As if his wish was a prophecy, Damion Sawyers and Dwayne Mills placed George's in a comfortable lead in the 10th and 20th minutes respectively.

Sawyer's secured his name on the scorer's sheet after receiving a dicing pass from Tian Taylor that sliced Donald Quarrie's defence which he netted with a powerful strike.

Fuelled by the fans, Mills scored the second goal for St George's after hitting a powerful free-kick from 25 yards out.

St George's and Donald Quarrie are now tied for top spot in group A with seven points.

Two players were red carded in the 78th and 79th minutes respectively. Donald Quarrie's main man, Horatio Taffe, received a second yellow card in the 78th minute after a vicious tackle to Ainsley Deer. Shortly after that, St George's first goalscorer Sawyer's received a red card for violent conduct against another player.

After the game, Bell was pleased with the performance of his team and said they would get even better with time.

"I'm feeling very good. The guys have been working hard in practice over the past two weeks. The last two games didn't go in our favour so this was a well-deserved win. Some players stepped up today and that helped us quite a bit and gave us some more options to work with.

"We have Norman Manley on Friday and if we have a good game against them that should give us the confidence to come out of the first round, which is what our goal is," he told The Gleaner.

Donald Quarrie's coach, Owen Wright, admitted that his team "will have to go back to the drawing board" and added that the officiating heavily impacted the final score. An irate Wright gave his honest opinion of the officials after the game.

"The referees played their part. It (officiating) was very, very poor. You can see the bias in it. It was more in St George's favour. She (referee) gave the way out free kicks and protect St George's area. She intimidated the players bad and our top striker get a red card and I know him can't take the pressure," he said.

Bell also gave his thoughts on the officiating.

"Wright told me that the referee gave me this game. I don't usually complain about officiating during a game but to be honest it seems that we are always on the wrong side of the officials' call. But is the game and I don't get on the officials 'cause they do have a job to do," he said.
