Cliff Hughes and Liz Bennett cut 'Nationwide's' birthday cake as the programme celebrated five years on Friday. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

SEEMS LIKE a short time but in five years, 'Nationwide', Power 106's news magazine programme, has flourished into one of the most popular and respected programmes on the air.

The 'Nationwide' group celebrated its anniversary at the Hilton Hotel last Friday night. Anyone making their way to the party could hear hosts Cliff Hughes, Carol Narcisse, Carol Vassell and Ralston Hyman. So imagine everyone's surprise when the elevator doors opened on the 18th floor to find them in the hallway (the beauty of outside broadcasts).

MEETING AND GREETING

Once they went off the air, it was time for the hosts to really greet their guests; a simple wave at the elevator door would not have been enough. The whole staff was out, from the studio engineers to the news readers. Some of the more popular guests in the show's past and those who knew the show's early beginnings all came to relive the memories.

The hosts even hooked up with former colleagues via telephone from the United States as they reminisced about the old days. Cliff Hughes paid tribute, especially to the late Hugh Crosskill for helping from conceptualisation to the teething pains.

Of course, no birthday party is complete without a cake and quite rightly, around 9:00 p.m., Cliff Hughes and the hard working Liz Bennett did the honours. Looking forward to another five years.
