EOJ prepared and ready

Walker

SOME 250 workers will take part in today's by-election in St. Ann North East in which a high voter turnout is expected, says Danville Walker, Director of Elections.

The workers include presiding officers, poll clerks, supervisors and couriers who will be working out of 113 polling stations at 33 locations within the division. According to Mr. Walker, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) is ready to deal with all eventualities.

"We're ready and all the stations have been settled. Security has been arranged for all stations and election day workers are already in place," Mr. Walker told The Gleaner yesterday.

He said preparations were made for the workers to overnight in St. Ann to ensure all stations opened on time at 7:00 a.m. today. The security personnel were "well briefed and well organised" and he anticipated no problems: "I think any problems that do arise we will be able to deal with them efficiently and effectively," he emphasised.

The EOJ boss said the voters' list, the so-called black books containing the demographic data of each elector and "all of the regular supplies" were in place to be distributed last night:

"We have everything that we need down here. All the stations have been visited and arrangements have been made and they will all be cleaned by tonight (last night) and ready to receive the electors first thing in the morning," said Mr. Walker.

He warned members of the public that it was illegal for them to congregate within 100 yards of a polling station.
