G-G launches tag drive

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Sir Howard Cooke, officially launched the Upward and Onward Juno Society of Jamaica's Tag Drive at Kings House during a recent courtesy visit by members of the group.

The Society, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary is made up of women and girls from the Moravian Church, and has the distinction of being the first organisation for women in Jamaica.

President of the Society, Vivienne Tomlin, who presented a copy of the Organisation's Manual to Sir Howard, told His Excellency that the group's Centenary celebrations was a proud moment in its history. She noted that the society's primary aim was to guide Jamaican girls to a full, Christian life in church, home and community, and that over the years, it worked hard to raise the standard of womanhood in Jamaica by displaying leadership by example, encouraging self-respect as well as the ability to earn a living.

Sir Howard remarked that Jamaica could be justly proud of the organisation's Centenary celebrations as it had demonstrated the true meaning of service through its efforts at helping society, especially young women through its programme of activities. He added that few persons understood the difficult task faced by voluntary organisations in dealing with social issues such as poverty, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and the general breakdown in moral standards, and encouraged the girls not to be swayed by societal pressures.

Mesaline Stephenson, a member of the group, pinned the first tag on Sir Howard, who officially launched the Tag Drive.
