Doctor arrested

A 40-YEAR-OLD doctor has been arrested and charged with performing an abortion on a 14-year-old and has been granted $200,000 bail.

Dr. Eden Godfrey of Hopewell, Hanover, was charged with committing an illegal abortion and conspiracy to commit abortion under chapters 72 and 73 of the Offences Against the Persons Act.

A 23-year-old man, Anthony Haughton of Grange Hill, Westmoreland, was also charged with conspiracy to commit abortion as well as carnal abuse under section 50 of the same Act. He was also granted $200,000 bail.

The Constabulary Commun-ication Network (CCN) said that in November 1999, the 14-year-old girl was involved in an intimate relationship with Haughton. When it was discovered that she was pregnant she was reportedly taken to a doctor in January for an abortion.

She was later taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital because of complications which developed following the abortion.

The police were called in and Dr. Godfrey and Haughton were arrested and charged. They were taken before the Lucea Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and are scheduled to return to court on August 8.
