Who are the rich to be taxed?

The Editor, Sir:

What does Anne Shirley mean by saying that the taxing of cigarettes will only affect the poor? Will someone please stand up and tell the Jamaican people what is the difference between what the Government is doing in terms of the tax package and what the Opposition is proposing?

I need to know who the rich are and whether or not they eat differently from the poor. Do the rich eat cornmeal, corn beef, salt, cock soup, syrup, etc?

Paying more taxes

I believe that those who are able to buy more will essentially be paying more in taxes. A person who is able to purchase one case of corn beef will surely be paying more tax than the person who can buy one tin. Those people who Dr Davies says have made millions from government paper, who are they? Are we just hearing arguments about taxing the rich without any serious thought given to what is being said? We need a national discussion on it.

No one in this country should feel as if they are excluded from bearing the burden. But let us not just say "tax the rich" because it sounds politically correct. Will Lambert Brown, Vincent Morrison, Anne Shirley and Helen Davies-White please go a step further and tell us who are these wealthy people they are talking about?

I am sure Gordon 'Butch' Stewart will tell you that he contributes more to Jamaica than all of those people combined. So who are we talking about? I need to know who must be taxed that are not being taxed and how.

I am, etc.,
