Taxes, taxes and more taxes!

Jamaicans voiced their opinions on what the new tax package announced by Government this week would mean for them.

  • Reverend Norman Jackson

More prayer, more fasting. When we tithe (give one-tenth of your earnings to the Church) God will take care of us. I don't believe in this recession thing. God is saying Jamaica needs to return to Him and He will stem the tide. If Jamaica, if our leaders give back to God, He will get us out of the rut we are in.

  • Juliet Williams-Campbell, secretary

To be honest with you, I will have to start cutting back on the less important stuff and concentrate on the most important things. I might have to give up the Internet, or buy less phone cards, or cook lunch instead of buying lunch every day.

  • Gregory Burrowes, police officer

This is going to bring strain on the country and increase crime. Now dem start tax patty and perishable goods. Mi haffi cut back on a lot of stuff. Mi haffi cut out patties now and resort to bulla. How yuh raise tax and nuh raise pay?

  • Rohan Collins, civil servant

The Government not increasing salaries, but taxes are going up. We have to find some alternative means of employment ... do something on the side. I have a motor vehicle ... I might have to start taking people from point A to point B and charge them. I have to try to do something to help myself.

  • Carol Moodie, secretary

I am a 'shopaholic' but I am going to have to shop less. I'm definitely going to have to cut back because I cant keep up with that anymore. I am going to have to buy less quantity and only buy the most important things - buy exactly what I need. Wi going to have to learn to conserve - even though you conserve and the bill still high. We have to start turning out the light when wi not using it and have everybody gather 'round one TV.
