Better projections for 2010

Barbados (CMC):
Barbados is entering the new year optimistic that it will continue to overcome the challenges posed by a global economic and financial crisis that has severely impacted other Caribbean countries, according to a report on www.cananews.net.
"I think that we have managed well. When I compare it to what has happened to other countries, both in our region and otherwise, Barbados has done pretty well in the circumstances," Prime Minister David Thompson said.
He said while the projections were better for 2010, the island would most likely work its way out of the current economic problems by the latter half of next year.
"Essentially, we have to see how our tourism season performs and manage our resources through the recessionary period and then look to benefit. There will be a lag, obviously, from what is happening elsewhere...barring unforeseen circumstances, Barbados is well poised to work its way out of these economic conditions," he said.
He told reporters that most businesses in the distributive sector have indicated an improved situation with hoteliers saying "they are seeing reasonably good bookings or better-than-expected bookings.
The prime minister described 2009 as a "tough year" with the "goalposts moved significantly".
