Day-night Tests within two years

LONDON (AP):

International Cricket Council (ICC) president David Morgan will be "surprised and disappointed" if day-night Tests aren't introduced within two years. The ICC hopes the move would increase crowds in parts of the world where the five-day game's popularity is on the wane.

Morgan said yesterday that Test cricket should always be the "pinnacle of the game".

"Eighteen months ago I wouldn't have been overly enthusiastic about this, thinking of tradition and records, but Test cricket has changed over 130 years and there are now very good reasons for bringing crowds out. I'd be surprised if we don't see day-night Test cricket within the next two years - surprised and disappointed."

Lucas, Quow favoured

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

World Championships bronze medallists Josanne Lucas and Renny Quow are the frontrunners to clinch the top honours at next January's national athletics awards ceremony.

Lucas became the first Trinidadian woman to medal at a senior global meet, when she finished third at the Berlin showpiece in the women's 400 metres hurdles, clocking 53.20 seconds to set a new national record.

Quow, meanwhile, also finished third in the men's 400 metres in Berlin in a time of 45.02 seconds. He had set a personal best of 44.53 seconds in the semi-finals to be the second fastest quarter miler in 2009 and the second quickest ever in T&T.

League queries Wolves

LONDON (AP):

The Premier League has asked Wolverhampton manager Mick McCarthy to explain why he selected a heavily weakened team that lost to Manchester United. McCarthy made 10 changes to the side that beat Tottenham last week for Tuesday's 0-3 loss at United. Only goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was retained.

The Premier League said yesterday that its board had written to Wolves "to request their observations in relation to the team fielded" at United. McCarthy said he was giving his first-choice players a rest ahead of a more winnable Premier League match against Burnley on Sunday.

Gascoigne arrested

NEWCASTLE, England (AP):

Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been arrested for being drunk and disorderly. Police say they took the 42-year-old Gascoigne into custody from a suburb in Newcastle at about 2:15 a.m. yesterday. Gascoigne now faces a fine of up to 80 pounds (US$131).

Gascoigne scored 10 goals in 56 matches for England. He played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Middlesbrough before retiring in 2005. He was sectioned three times under the mental health act last year.

Lehmann banned

BERLIN (AP):

Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been banned for three matches following his sending-off last weekend for stepping on an opponent's foot, the Germany Football Federation said yesterday. The 40-year-old former Germany and Arsenal keeper was shown the red card close to the end of Sunday's Bundesliga match at Mainz for stepping on the foot of striker Aristide Bance.

The resulting 90th-minute penalty gave Mainz a 1-1 draw and spoiled new Stuttgart coach Christian Gross' league debut. Stuttgart says Lehmann, who strained a knee ligament during the incident, had since apologised to his teammates.
