Cavalier progressed to the semi-finals of the Claro Jackie Bell knockout semi-finals after beating fellow Super League contenders Rae Town 2-1 at Breezy Castle yesterday.
Cavalier got on the scoresheet first courtesy of a 26th-minute strike from in-form striker Gee Daley, who had also netted in the team's previous encounter. Rae Town's response came early in the second half by way of a 48th-minute goal from Damion Jackson.
Locksley Thompson, who had squandered two glorious opportunities in quick succession, made amends in the 75th minute as he came up with the game-winning goal to secure Cavalier's progression.
Good show
Cavalier's player/coach, David Laylor, was very pleased with his team's performance.
"I think Cavalier gave a good show today; we had total control of the game. In spurts, they (Rae Town) come on but Cavalier had control of the game."
Michael Francis, coach of Rae Town, believes his team's failure to put away their chances cost them the game.
"The two teams played very well. It was a very tactical game but goals win matches and we didn't score our chances, so we came out on the losing side," Francis said.
Cavalier's opponent in the semi-final play-offs will be Real Mona, who defeated Olympic Gardens 4-1. Sheldon Minott, Akeeli Martin, Kirk Allen and Steve Richards scored Real Mona's goals in the 5th, 54th, 60th and 84th minutes, respectively. Garfield Gordon scored Olympic Gardens' consolation goal in the 20th minute.
The other semi-final will see giant-killers Greenwich Town go up against Santos after both teams registered contrasting wins. Greenwich Town clipped Constant Spring 1-0, thanks to a 55th-minute strike from Ricardo Monroe, while Santos defeated Maverley/Hughenden 3-0 courtesy of strikes from Peter Gordon (66th), Fabian Nethersole (76th) and Norade Jenkinson (90th).
