Take your own aeroplane food

The Editor, Sir:

M. Hewitt's letter in the Friday Gleaner captioned 'Poor Air J Food' had concerns with not only the taste (quality) of the tea served, but also the small quantity breakfast served on the flight out of JFK. This reminds me of our recent trip.

On an American Airline early flight out of Kingston, breakfast consisted of a cup of lukewarm tea or orange juice and a small bag of snacks. In today's reality, we wouldn't describe this as poor AA food. On the AA five-hour-odd flight to Los Angeles, after a two-hour layover in Miami, we were served a cup of drink, and if you needed to chew on something, it was on sale in-flight.

The wise old lady that shared the seat, opened a plastic container of home-cooked morsel. She was well apprised of the current situation in the airline industry. And so, after a well-learnt lesson, we carried our own plastic containers on the return leg.

Formerly, Air J served up a substantial breakfast coming out of JFK: ackee and salt fish, callaloo, salt fish, yam and fried dumplings, but those days are in the past. Travellers to and from North America should, like the wiser lady, pack a meal to stay nourished during these lengthy flights.
