Councillors concerned with illegal vending

MAY PEN, Clarendon:

Illegal vending in Clarendon's capital, May Pen, has become a nuisance.

People's National Party councillor for the York Town division, Uphel Purcell, has criticised the parish council's handling of the situation.

In response to those criticisms at a recent parish council meeting, Mayor Milton Brown said an operation, conducted by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), to rid sidewalks and any other area where informal selling occurs took place a month ago. However, Purcell has continued his criticisms, saying the efforts of the forces needed to be consistent.

Brown said he would again have dialogue with the JCF and the ISCF.

The May Pen market has, for the most part, been underutilised and, despite making it cleaner and more attractive, many vendors have deci-ded against using it. According to them, the market isn't the most strategically located place for them to sell.
