THE ELECTORAL Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) may soon announce the three additional constituencies which have been created.

Karl Samuda, general secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party and ECJ member, says one of the constituencies will be known as Central St James.

"That new seat is a result of the increase in electors in that parish. That has been agreed upon," he said.

Samuda also said the two constituencies to be established in St Catherine will be concluded within weeks.

"We have debated the matter, we have discussed it, we have reviewed it ... . The independent members of the Electoral Commission will be deciding on the final configuration in the parish of St Catherine and we are expecting to get the results of that configuration within a week or two, maximum," Samuda said.

In March, the Constitution was amended to increase the maximum number of constituencies from 60 to 65. Parliament also voted for an increase in the number of constituencies to an odd number, no greater than 63, in the first instance.
