Sure he is 'honourable this', 'ambassador that' and a record-breaking track star, but on Saturday, December 5, Usain Bolt will simply be DJ Usain.
Athletics' poster boy will display his mixing skills at Richmond Estate, St Ann, as he hosts the Usain Bolt 9.58 Super Party, the theme a nod to his 100-metre world record. Bolt has included himself as part of the entertainment package that includes professional DJs - ZJ Liquid and Tony Matterhorn - as well as recording artistes Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Marcia Griffiths, Etana and American singer, The Dream.
Bolt will also don a more significant cap on the night, that of philanthropist. Proceeds from the party will be in aid of buying a plot of land for the Sherwood Content Health Centre in Trelawny, a facility Bolt benefited from as a child.
Bolt told The Sunday Gleaner that he and his manager, Norman Peart, had made plans for a special birthday party after he rewrote the record books at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August. However, he said the needs of the health centre outweighed his personal plans.
"We were planning to have my party again, but realised that the centre is in need of help. So we decided to have a party that would go towards it and see how much of the money gained can be used," said Bolt, who last week was named The Gleaner's Man of the Year for the second consecutive year.
personalities worth seeing
He added that apart from being a worthy cause the event will have personalities worth coming to see.
"I would definitely say me, first, then the sort of people we are trying to get," Bolt joked in response to the party's draw. "We have international celebrities onboard. The team is working hard so I hope these will help towards a great party," said the former William Knibb student.
After dismantling the field in both the Olympics and World Championships, the ever-smiling Bolt showed the world his true Jamaican spirit when he playfully entertained the spectators with some eye-catching Jamaican dance moves. Bolt said at Richmond Estate there will be plenty of space for people to dance along with him and enjoy themselves. "Normally when I'm at the club partying it's always jam-packed. Now there is more space for everyone and they are getting an opportunity to see their stars in person," he said.
Additional funds from the event, which is being promoted by TurnKey Productions and Headline Entertainment, will be donated towards various foundations through the United Way charity, which comes under the leadership of United Way Worldwide.
