NOTE-WORTHY: A woman top cop?

Published: Saturday | November 14, 2009

In the letter of the day titled 'Why not a woman as top cop?' written by Hero Scott and published on November 11, it dawned on me that sometimes our opinions may be too impractical, improbable and impossible.

I do not know but pardon my ignorance - was Owen Ellington given the post of assistant commissioner of police simply because he took control of security for the Cricket World Cup competition hosted by Jamaica? That seems absurd to me! it seems to me that Scott might have been the recipient of wrong information or maybe it was just incorrectly interpreted.

I am a woman and I support woman power but if a woman gets the post who would it be and if the men cannot take the pressure and have quit, how will she survive? I envy no one who gets that post and I do not care if it is a man or woman. The absurdity of thinking a single individual can solve crime is an excuse we encourage and embrace in playing the blame game for the causes of our country's crime worries.

Opposition too negative

With the Jamaican economy in so much turmoil, and with the Government trying its utmost best to secure an IMF loan, one would hope that the Opposition, instead of being so critical, would be more supportive of the administration in this endeavour.

It is about time that the Opposition realise that most of what is happening in the country today is the result of the 18 years of failed leadership exhibited by their party. Currently, our country is indebted both locally and internationally, and is trying to secure a loan from the IMF so as to rescue the economy from going into a depression. To prospective unemployed or already laid-off public-sector workers, never give up because unlike the United States, your country is filled with acres and acres of wasteland ready to be cultivated.
