CDA head to meet Spencer today

Published: Friday | November 13, 2009

Health Minister Rudyard Spencer has summoned the head of the Child Development Agency (CDA), Alison Anderson, for talks today.

Anderson is facing calls for her resignation from the human-rights group, Jamaicans for Justice, which claims the CDA presented half-truths to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

The CDA head has rejected the claims while arguing that her agency has never misrepresented the facts it presents in its frequent reports to the IACHR.

Yesterday, Spencer refused to be drawn on either side of the controversy. He told journalists the health ministry will issue a full statement after today's meeting.

The CDA was established in 2004 as a merger of the Children Services Division, the Adoption Board and the Child Support Unit.

It integrated the functions of the three entities in an effort to provide comprehensive delivery of services to children and their parents.

The CDA has statutory responsibility for children who are in need of care and protection.
