Reigning champions St James High School and newly crowned Ben Francis KO champions Glenmuir were among the eight teams that qualified for the quarter-final round of the 2009 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup, following yesterday's final round of inter-zone games.

St James High defeated William Knibb 4-1 at Jarrett Park to emerge group winners on goal difference over Frome Technical, who clipped Manning's 1-0 at Frome to finish with identical seven points.

In their game, St James scored through Ricardo Morris (2), Roshane Reid and Allan Ottey, while Jamoi Clarke was the man on target for William Knibb.

Good performance

"It was a fairly good performance and I'm basically satisfied," said St James High's coach, Pastor Hugh Solomon. "Our intention was to get a few goals and win the game and we basically did that."

Glenmuir, seeking to add the daCosta Cup to their Ben Francis KO title, were quite rampant against Bog Walk. Despite needing only a point to win the group, they scored a big 6-0 win. The Patrick 'Jackie' Walters-coached team scored through Paul Wilson (3), Cloval Dinnal (2) and Tajay Campbell.

Garvey Maceo, who got a lucky break when they were reinstated into the inter-zone round after initial qualifiers Old Harbour withdrew, made use of their luck by topping Group Six. Facing a must-win situation against Dinthill, they ran out comfortable 4-1 winners to finish on seven points.

Topping the group

Marcus Garvey Technical topped Group Two when they drew 0-0 with Cornwall College at Drax Hall, which saw them topping the group with seven points. By virtue of topping the group, Marcus Garvey sent both Cornwall College and Rusea's packing.

Last year's beaten finalist Spaldings High, who only needed to avoid defeat against Clarendon College to win Group Three, got the job done with a 0-0 draw against Clarendon College. Having previously beaten Bellefield 1-0 and Munro College 2-0, Spaldings ended their fixture with seven points.

St Elizabeth Technical High School became the final automatic qualifiers when they outscored Manchester High 1-0 to top the group with seven points. However, Manchester, who had won their two first games, advanced alongside Frome Technical as a best second-place finisher.
