Letters - Do something about crime and violence
Published: Wednesday | November 11, 2009
Dear Dr Abel,
Thank you for voicing the cry of so many of us Jamaicans. I have circulated your piece from the Health section of the November 4 edition of The Gleaner and I am ready for the next step. Thank you and many blessings!
Dear Dr Abel,
Well done! I think you really stated the facts in your commentary entitled "Do something about crime and violence". That was good, responsible journalism and I felt it fulfilled the very big responsibility you have as a person with 'a voice' in Jamaica to guide the country in a positive direction. Thank you.
I was glad to see there was no blaming or finger-pointing at the old colonialist. You encouraged people (Jamaicans) to take responsibility, to stop being the victim, to get up and do something and to stop making excuses. The time has come for the people of Jamaica to fearlessly address their issues. Justice and the rule of law should be the focus. However, unfortunately, the pendulum will probably have to swing the other way towards heavy-handedness and oppressiveness because the situation is so totally out of control.
I just don't know if the people are ready or willing to allow the wind of change to blow. If they are not, then Jamaica is on the edge of a cliff and it will topple over. It will not be a place where anyone really wants to live and raise a family; certainly tourists won't want to come here. Keep beating the drum of truth and you will make a difference.
