Route to criminality

Published: Tuesday | November 3, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

In Montego Bay, the lawlessness of road users, primarily legal and illegal taxis, is commonplace and even prevalent. I, however, have never once seen the police on the roads engaged in efforts to deter such criminality.

For instance, reckless boring and turning right on red are standard for passenger transports at the intersection on which the Montego Freeport Police Station sits.

Unchecked occurrences

These constant unchecked occurrences are a daily affirmation to law-abiding citizens and criminals alike that our policing systems are impotent.

Once I asked a taxi driver if he was not afraid of being caught, acting with such brazenness in front of the police station, and he responded that many of the taxis belonged to policemen and, therefore, there was nothing to fear. I wonder if this is a standard pattern with much of our crime.

I am, etc.,
