Athletes should not be taxed
Published: Friday | October 30, 2009
The Editor, Sir:
Jamaica should grant tax-free status to all athletes living in Jamaica, whether Jamaicans or otherwise.
Athletes typically work for a short percentage of their lives. The lucky ones earn enough to last them for the rest of their lives, but most never earn enough to support themselves.
As more athletes choose Jamaica as their preferred place to live, we will develop a vibrant sporting industry which will employ more Jamaicans and enrich us many times more than the taxes we could collect.
I am, etc.,
