Hellshire and the drug trade

Published: Tuesday | October 27, 2009

The Editor, Sir;

It is rather amazing and suspicious to have political representatives - both present and past and police officers, revealing to The Gleaner that they are aware of the ganja-gun transaction that is taking place at Hellshire Beach. If they know about these activities and have done nothing, then they have allowed the crime scheme to continue, and for that they should be held accountable. I visit Hellshire at least three times every year and I have never seen a policeman on patrol on the beach or in the water. What's up with that? Why are there no policemen on patrol on the beach or in the vicinity?

The issue I have with this talk now about the drug-gun trade is that most likely, the Government/UDC is trying to sell the property to some investor who will, as they normally do, bar Jamaicans from the beach. If, in fact, there is a drug-gun trade going on at Hellshire, then the police are not doing a good job in trying to control the situation. If they know that that is taking place, they should be aggressively using patrols, undercover agents and boats to patrol and capture the wrongdoers, or at least deter them from such activity that is endangering the lives of locals, as well as visitors, who are there for a little enjoyment, to eat some fish and festival and to get a dip in the salt water.

I am, etc.,
