NOTE-WORTHY: Put Chuck at Justice Ministry

Published: Tuesday | October 27, 2009

I disagree with your ringing endorsement of Delroy Chuck for the post of minister of national security. Chuck as lawyer and academic epitomises all the kind words you have said about him, and more. However, only a power-hungry ego-tripping fool would subject his health, pride and reputation to be minister of national security at this time.

Unless we have fundamental changes on how we enact and fast-track legislation to give the police and our courts the authority to do their job, Mr Chuck should never consider this move.

Criminals are not afraid of the law, and nothing has been done by our legislature to change our laws to pre-empt criminals and to have stiffer sentences to punish the perpetrators of these crimes. For this reason, I think history has proved the inevitable failure of all our ministers of national security - whether PNP or JLP.

Mr Chuck should hold his corner as Speaker of the House. It is not worth being minister of national security at a cost to his health, pride and reputation.

Bad JPS policy

While I sympathise with letter-writer DMJ (Sunday Gleaner, October 25), the unfortunate truth is that it's not a foreign Jamaica Public Service (JPS) that is treating a Jamaican like that, but more like another Jamaican without any "common sense".

It is unlikely that two entities could supply one little country like Jamaica with separate facilities to provide electricity. However, one company should be able to hire only those with a certain level of intelligence. That policy is just dumb.
