Usain Bolt

The Editor, Sir:

Like everyone, I watched excitedly Jamaica's performance in Berlin, but I was in awe during Usain Bolt's races.

Now, after the thousands of encomiums, how as a nation do we record this legendary performance? Usain would simply say that while he was recording his personal best, it all began in his rural community in Trelawny. There is no doubt that he deserves national acclaim for his victories, but his feat and his ambassadorial conduct have been so skilful that we should take time to determine what the appropriate honour should be.

I suggest the following:

  • A. Establish the Usain Bolt Foundation to scout for boys and girls who show signs of athletic ability but who lack nurturing, discipline, a solid educational background and financial support to fully develop their potential.

  • B. Funding should be undertaken by:

Sponsors and donors - national and international.

    Agencies

    CHASE

    Advertisers

    Others

  • C. Location - Should be Trelawny.

  • D. Membership - Should include Usain Bolt as chairman (emeritus).

    Members could include:

    Managers

    Coaches

Other athletes from Beijing and/or Berlin

    His appointed representatives.

  • E. The Usain Bolt Foundation should be established in Sherwood Content, Trelawny, where authentic memorabilia would be displayed, along with a life-size statue of Usain.

Let us try to preserve his legacy because too much of Jamaica's 'immortal feats' à la George Headley have remained a postscript to history.

As far as I am concerned, we have a good seven to ten years for mature development of this concept, but if we do not do something now, we will lose the opportunity to make a real commitment to preserve Usain Bolt's legacy to the world'.

    I am, etc.,

    HORACE A. CLARKE

    Kingston
