Pajero mamas and their boys

Published: Wednesday | September 30, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

Please allow me space in response to the several letters published by you, castigating me (not castrating) for comments I made at a Cornwall College Awards function.

My comments have indeed drawn the ire of many mothers. The responses have demonstrated their own fears and the agenda they have set for their boys (and girls) within the confines of their own schedules.

My comments were not aimed at the mothers with 'many rivers to cross.' Rather, they were aimed at mothers who cross many 'rivers' with the weight of their boys on their backs. Out of fear that the boys may get wet, or worse, topple over in the rushing waters if allowed to walk, they lovingly stifle experience, adventure and the growth in confidence and responsibility that every boy (and girl) must enjoy.

Paralysed by fear

We cannot continue to be paralysed by fear and to directly transmit our fears to our children, like metal conductors struck by lightning. Where is the 'copper' within us that would safely conduct our fears away and neutralise the effects on our children?

So, mothers, let not your ire prevent you from being irie and wholesome.

PS. No more attacks on me, please, or I will have to call on my mother.

I am, etc.,

Nathan Robb
