Alumni in the diaspora respond to the university

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) has been making significant expansion in its delivery of programmes amid government's dwindling subvention. The big challenge is finding adequate resources to deliver these programmes to a population which simply cannot afford the full cost of this much-needed service.

In spite of the challenges, UTech has been forging ahead with the hope that other stakeholders will acknowledge the importance of investing in education for our country and partner with this national institution that has a tremendous track record in serving Jamaica.

Several groups and individuals have stepped forward to help. These organisations include alumni chapters in the diaspora: Ontario, New York and Florida.

The Florida Chapter, which was formed only this year, is aggressively seeking to support UTech's scholarship programme and infrastructural development.

The CAST-UTech Alumni (Florida Chapter) presented a cheque for US$6,000 to the university on Tuesday, August 4. The funds will be used for the installation of audio-visual equipment for a lecture theatre in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies.
