It's time to start flaunting feathered lashes and eccentric 'eyelights', all by using the right mascara. Take a look at some of the available types of mascara and the tricks that the Style team has given you to get big, bold, look-at-me lashes that will have you wanting to masquerade around the town.

1. Fancy flare

The lengthening mascara does exactly what it says it does. Blasting your lashes from root to tip with its dense bristles, add more mascara on your lashes for a stunning elongate look.

Trick: Not everyone will have specific mascara for lengthening but you can achieve that look with regular mascara. Simply close your eyes or keep them slightly open and place the mascara wand on top of your lashes at the base, pulling through to amplify them. This technique also works to remove clumps.

2. Va-voom, va-volume

Thickening mascara gives those with thin lashes more volume. The shorter bristles give a fuller effect, adding intensity as it reaches the lash from corner to corner for a 360-degree frame around your eyes.

Trick: If you're using regular mascara, you can wiggle the wand left to right at the base of your lashes (near the roots).

N.B.: Wiggling is important because it not only thickens the lashes, but it also separates them.

3. Wet and styled

Planning to attend a water party and worrying about runny mascara? Or are you a cry-baby? Well, waterproof mascara will commit to your lashes. Quality waterproof mascara lasts through rain, sweat, humidity and tears. It doesn't smudge unless applied incorrectly.

Trick: Ensure that mascara is evenly applied to the lashes by moving from base to tip gradually. Then go over a second time quickly. Waterproof make-up is not easily removed; but using warm water can do the trick.

4. Spiralling for miles

The spiral brush mascara is one of the easier-to-use mascaras. The spiral shape transforms flat eyelashes by stretching the centre and giving an outward curve where the lash is shortest.

Trick: Centre your wand before you apply the mascara. Ensure the liquid is evenly distributed along the brush with the least on the tip to avoid clumping at the corners.

5. Mardi Gras tears

Mascara is not limited to only black or brown; you can find it in colours like purple, pink, green, blue, gold and even with glitter. These colours jazz up your lashes adding joie de vivre.

Trick: Brush on a coat of black mascara and allow it to dry. Then apply coloured mascara to the tips of your lash. This will enhance the colour of your iris and gives 'eyelights'.

6. Carnival coil

The coil is a rounded plastic mascara application that does not comb through the lashes. It is only used to add shimmer to the tips of the lash.

Trick: Get enough mascara on the coil and hold it firm in your hand, rotating the applicator in one position at the tips of the lash. It will give the lash a natural shine without excess shimmer.
