OUR makes decision on JPS today

Jamaicans will find out this afternoon whether their budgets will have to face a rate adjustment from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) will be holding a press conference where they will inform the public on their determination of JPS's rate application.

Special request

In March, the JPS applied for a tariff review, requesting a 23.08 per cent pre-tax return on its weighted average cost of capital invested. The existing tariff regime expired on May 31.

The OUR had held three public consultations on the matter in St James, Manchester and Kingston and St Andrew to discuss the issue.

'No truth to high soliciting rumours'

Public relations officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Wilton Dyer, has rebuffed allegations that an employee of the Jamaican high commission in Britain had attempted to solicit a prostitute.

A report which appeared on the British website www.mirror.co.uk on Monday stated that a Jamaican, employed to the high commission, was among several foreign embassy staff who were, in 2008, accused of more than 90 serious and minor offences, including theft, sex offences and drunk driving.

Groundless

"There was an incident but, following discussions with the British authorities and our own discussions, the accusation was found to be groundless. It has not been substantiated," Dyer told The Gleaner yesterday.

He added that the Jamaica staff member at the high commission had not been accused of any other offence.
