Bolt deserves OJ and more

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I find it quite surprising, even a bit insulting, that so many well-thinking Jamaicans continue to question whether Usain Bolt truly deserves the small token of appreciation that the Government plans to bestow on him for his truly magnificent accomplishments.

Conrey Hanson, in his Letter to the Editor published on September 21, questioned whether Bolt "even achieved the requirements to be recommended for such an honour?" However, if we were to go by the criteria set out by Hanson, that "recipients of this honour demonstrate years of service, dedication and commitment to Jamaica's social and economic development", Usain Bolt is more than deserving of the title 'Honourable'.

Unquestionable dedication

Bolt's dedication and commitment to his country is unquestionable and this young man has brought nothing but glory, honour and praise to his country of birth.

While it may have taken many decades for many of our past recipients of national honours to either make or be recognised for their contribution to this nation, at age 23, Bolt has achieved what the vast majority of us can only dream of - to be known as the fastest human being to have ever walked the planet Earth. Bolt is the only athlete to have become double Olympic champion and world record holder at age 21. Think about it. While many young men his age can only boast of having three and four babymothers, Bolt has shown us how truly great we are as Jamaicans and what can be achieved when we commit our lives to the pursuit of excellence.

I am, etc.,

A PROUD JAMAICAN
