Cooking oil is not the enemy

Dear Ms Thompson,

I am now fully convinced that 95 per cent of our friends do not understand the true meaning of saturated and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats are those that have been heated above 130F during processing, and unsaturated fats are 'cold-pressed' fats such as olive oil and many others that can be cold pressed.

When heat over 130F is applied during processing, all natural nutrients that are present in whatever is processed become saturated with this high heat, and all the essential vitamins and minerals that are essential to our bodies immediately become dormant (destroyed) and have no use but for the garbage. So this is what builds the high-cholesterol level in our bodies which, in turn, clogs our arteries and joints.

So ladies and gentlemen, please try and obtain cold-pressed oils which are totally cholesterol-free with no side effects. When having your cold-pressed oils, please do not cook with it above 130F, 115 seems quite okay. I myself use it straight from the container on my vegetable or whatever. Cold-pressed oils are superior oils that cannot be surpassed by any other processed oils. All fruits, nuts and vegetables eaten in their raw state produce this precious ethereal ingredient (unsaturated fat). I hope I have changed this first writer's mind, Liz Rietz, artist and sculptor. Have a very good day, Ms Thompson.

It could be bipolar disorder

Dr Abel,

It would be good if you did an exploratory piece on borderline personality disorder (BPD). I believe many of the stories of spousal emotional abuse (and sometimes physical abuse) are linked to this phenomenon. There are many men who have to deal with this type of behaviour but we tend to cover it up because it's considered weak to suggest you have a wife/girlfriend who is abusive.

It would be good to do a piece on the differences between high-functioning and low-functioning BPD sufferers and the potential impact on their family and partners.
