Beautify Portmore

Portmore, St Catherine, needs a comprehensive beautification programme. This would be one way to foster pride in the citizens of the area. The move would also promote the marketability of Portmore both locally and overseas.

In May of this year, Portmore was twinned to the city of Lakeland in Florida. Based on Lakeland's expertise in beautification, a great opportunity is now available. As a matter of fact, Lakeland has agreed to send an experienced beautification officer to Portmore to assist and advise on beautification projects.

Futhermore, a road construction company based in Lakeland has given Portmore a non-potable water truck to assist with beautification projects.

This truck should arrive in a few weeks. There will be no excuse from now on.

Misunderstanding evolution

I read Paul Thorbourne's letter about finding a painting in the Arctic and asking if it could have evolved. It shows Thorbourne's complete lack of understanding of evolution.

The general theme of his argument has been around since 1802 when William Paley wrote his book, Natural Theology, about finding a watch in a field and, like Thorbourne, deducing that the living things we see around us had to have had an intelligent designer. Richard Dawkins and others have completely negated that argument. I would recommend he read The Blind Watchmaker by Dawkins.

As for his lumping together atheists and those who accept the theory of evolution, a poll done in 2001 showed that 40 per cent of scientists who accept the theory of evolution as fact are Christians and 55 per cent are atheists.

Why these traffic lights?

Earlier this month I was amazed to find a new set of traffic lights installed at the entrance to the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service on East National Heroes Circle. This is for the sole purpose of aiding employees to cross the road to their parking lot on the opposite side, in what, I suppose, was meant to be a green area.

These traffic lights could not be to facilitate vehicular entrance and exit to the ministry compound as the gates are near to the lights on either side, and when motorists are stopped on National Heroes Circle the gates are blocked.

Couldn't they have just installed a pedestrian crossing? Even a light-controlled one? After all, the Ministry of Finance should be the one most aware of the need to eliminate unnecessary expenditure.

Guess this loudly demonstrates the arrogance and incompetence of Government.
