Stewart Stephenson, the Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ) managing director, is leaving after three years at the helm of the government company that builds factories for sale and rent to firms.

Stephenson, an attorney who has also served in diplomatic posts including as Jamaica's ambassador to Cuba, will join the Norman Manley Law School at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he will head school's litigation and advocacy programme at its legal aid clinic.

Reginald Budhan, the permanent secretary at the investment of commerce ministry did not immediately name Stephenson's successor, but indicated that it would be an interim appointment of someone from within the ministry.

"We will be seconding someone from the ministry," Budhan said. "He is going to liaise with Ambassador Stephenson in the interim so that he understands the operational issues."

Stephenson, who has worked in securities and market regulation, joined the FCJ in 2006 and won praise from Budhan for tenure.

"It was a good one," Budhan said.

Stephenson was himself proud of the fact that during his stint the FCJ remained profitable and had a low staff turnover.
