Transport Minister Mike Henry says he will be meeting today with Ferris Ziadie, chairman of the Toll Authority, for an explanation regarding the toll increase along Highway 2000 on the weekend.
Motorists who used the highway were jolted by the hike which took effect at midnight Friday. A little more than a week ago, the Government had published that it would adjust the rates following an application by TransJamaican Highway, operators of the thoroughfare, for an increase.
Henry said the toll operators' action was insensitive. The new rates were gazetted only last Friday before it took effect.
Classes on at UWI
Administrators at the University of the West Indies say classes will go on as scheduled today in spite of three confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus on the campus.
They say, however, non-essential events and meetings that were scheduled to take place during the next seven days will be postponed to reduce exposure to the virus.
No more cases of the virus have been confirmed since Saturday, but university officials say 100 students are being treated for flu-like symptoms. They are advising all members of staff and students experiencing flu-like symptoms to stay away from the campus and to seek medical attention immediately.
New Methodist head
The Reverend Everald Leeanah Galbraith was officially appointed president of the Jamaica Methodist district during an induction service at the Coke Methodist Chapel in downtown Kingston yesterday.
Galbraith succeeded the Rev Dr Byron Chambers, who served in that position for two consecutive terms - six years - before his retirement.
