Big SDC Twenty20 final at Alpart today

Content Gardens of St Ann and St Elizabeth's Junction will face off today in the final of the Social Development Commission's (SDC) national community Twenty20 cricket competition. The venue is Alpart Sports Club in Nain, St Elizabeth, and match time is 2 p.m.

After the playing of 631 matches during the competition, it's now down to the final where the winning team will take home top prize money of $500,000.

Both teams are evenly matched, but the members of home team, Junction, to be led by Troy Powell, and which includes his brother Shane, are confident of bringing the title back to St Elizabeth.

"All we have to do is come out and play some good cricket," said Powell, after narrowly beating St Catherine champions Dela Vega City by four runs.

While the Powells are central to Junction winning, Content Gardens have placed their trust primarily in one man - Howard Harris, who can destroy any bowling attack on his day.

The 38-year-old Harris, a former national representative, rolled back the years in Content's semi-final victory at Ultimate, St Ann, in typical swashbuckling style.

Unbeaten 94

The burly right-handed batsman smashed a whirlwind 30-ball unbeaten 94 in his side's 39-run win via the Duckworth/Lewis method, and is again expected to deliver in front of an anticipated raucous and partisan Alpart crowd.

An upbeat Alanzo Harris, skipper of Content Gardens, said the game plan remains unchanged for the final, as the community and the entire parish aspire to go one step further of not just getting to the final for the first time but winning the title too.

"We just have to go out there and play hard cricket, as always, and we can come out victorious," the Content captain said.

"We just got to stick to our game plan and play basic cricket," he added.

Meanwhile, the final will be preceded by the third-place play-off, with South Star facing Dela Vega City at 10 a.m. for a $150,000 bounty.
