A police superintendent is to stand trial in the St Catherine Circuit Court on September 16 for the death of a policeman following a collision.

Charged with causing death by dangerous driving is Yvonne Martin-Daley of the Twickenham Park Training Division.

The last of four witnesses to testify for the Crown was Sergeant Osbourne Fearon of the St Catherine North Traffic Department.

He told the court that last year, on the morning of July 20, he was doing traffic duties in Spanish Town along the bypass in St Catherine, when he received a call.

The call took him to a section of the road near Michael Manley Boulevard, where he saw a damaged Suzuki Grand Vitara, which was driven by Martin-Daley.

Fearon said that beside the Vitara was a Honda motorcycle, ridden by Constable Mark Needham of the Quick Response team of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who, he said, was lying motionless next to the Vitara.

taken to hospital

Fearon said he had the injured policeman taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He added that the road surface was dry and level where the accident had taken place and that Martin-Daley's vehicle was pointing southerly, which indicated that she was trying to turn around.

Resident Magistrate Dunbar-Green, after hearing the testimony, said the Crown had a case and ordered a trial.
