Scaled-down celebration for athletes

The Government has yet to decide on how it will honour Jamaica's athletes who participated in the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding says he is delighted with the performances of the athletes and that the country owes them a great debt of gratitude for their success.
Golding said, however, that though the nation would be marking their achievements, the celebration would not be as grandiose as those that followed the Beijing Olympics.
He promised he would make an announcement as soon as Sports Minister Olivia Grange returns to the island.
The prime minister is mindful of the lavish celebrations held last year with a homecoming cere-mony at the Norman Manley International Airport. A motor-cade travelled from the Harbour View Roundabout through Norman Manley Boulevard, Port Royal Street, Marcus Garvey Drive, Portia Miller Square, Hagley Park Road, Half-Way Tree onwards to the National Stadium.
Effigies of members of the team were placed at points along the journey from the airport to the National Stadium.
Supporters from all over the country came in their numbers to greet the athletes. They were seen rocking to dancehall music, while some ran along the side of a float created for the athletes, touching their heroes, and some gathered on top of their cars, buses and even bus stops to get a glimpse of what was taking place.
