Member of parliament for East Rural St Andrew, Joseph Hibbert, is recuperating in hospital after suffering what is believed to have been a mild heart attack on Thursday night.

He was rushed to the Andrew's Memorial Hospital in St Andrew about 10 p.m. Thursday after complaining of chest pains.

Hibbert, who is at the centre of corruption allegations involving United Kingdom bridge builders Mabey and Johnson Limited, resigned from his post in the Government as state minister in the Ministry of Transport and Works last month.

The company admitted in a London court that it had bribed officials in Jamaica, which led to a raid on Hibbert's home, as well as businessman Deryck Gibson's, by the British Serious Fraud Squad.

General Secretary of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, Karl Samuda of told The Gleaner Hibbert was in high spirits when he visited him last evening.

"We are quite confident and very, very hopeful (that he will recuperate) because his personality is one that doesn't complain much. He is quite cheerful," he said.
