Minister of National Security, Senator Hon Dwight Nelson has reacted with a mixture of fury and sorrow at the killing of Police Constable Georgette Collymore who was attached to the Constant Spring Police Station.

Senator Nelson characterised the killing as particularly brutal as indications are that the gunmen armed with their deadly intentions, awaited the policewoman at her home in Mount Ogle, Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew.

"This serves as further testimony that the agents of law and order remain under sustained assault by brazen, merciless mercenaries," Senator Nelson declared.

He said it was heartrending that Constable Collymore who had dedicated her life in service to her country had just come off the job when she was brutally attacked and her life taken.

"The perpetration of this dastardly act reflects the lack of recognition for the sanctity of life," the national security minister said.

However, Senator Nelson noted that the courage of Constable Collymore continues to serve as a shining example to her colleagues as she refused to yield to the cowardly hoodlums and challenged them before she was overpowered.

Relentless pursuit

Senator Nelson urged investigators to be relentless in their pursuit of the perpetrators and subject them to the full extent of the law. He also called on persons who have information on the killing to call 119, 811 or 311.

In extending condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Constable Collymore, Senator Nelson acknowledged that the pain and grief being experienced are likely to be unbearable at this time.

He urged persons who were close to the policewoman to resort to Almighty God for sustenance.

Gunshot wounds

A report from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) said Constable Collymore, who was a resident of Mount Ogle, Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew, died at the University Hospital from gunshot wounds she sustained after being attacked at her home by two gunmen.

The CCN reports further said that about 6 p.m., Constable Collymore arrived home from work when she and a member of her family were pounced upon by two men armed with guns. During a struggle with one of the criminals she was shot. The hoodlums escaped in a grey, Toyota Corolla 'Kingfish' motor car with the officer's service revolver. The injured officer was taken to the University Hospital where she died while being treated. The Constant Spring Police are investigating.
