Doctor's advice - I am scared

  • Q. I am a 23-year-old man and I am extremely alarmed by the fact that I have just discovered a tiny, pink, floppy thing, which seems to be growing out of the urinary opening at the end of my organ. It has bled on a couple of occasions when I had sex with my girlfriend. Doc, I am terrified. Is this cancer?

    A. No. What you have noticed is almost certainly a little polyp, which is a type of wart. These things are very common, but they are no cause for alarm.

The swelling is caused from a virus which is transmitted during sex. The virus likes to establish itself in warm, moist places, such as the inside of the urinary opening.

The tissue which constitutes the polyp is really fragile. Bits of it break off very easily during sex, which results in bleeding.

Visit a doctor so he can examine the lump and confirm my suspicions. If so, he will send you to a specialist to have it removed. That is not a painful process.

Please don't have sex till this problem has been cured. Since your girlfriend probably has the virus too, she should undergo a check-up.

  • Q. I get a pain in the left side of my chest, just below the nipple. It happens sometimes when I am having sex. Is this heart trouble, Doc? I am 23.

    A. Heart trouble is unlikely at age 23. Pain located below the nipple is very common in young adults; it is referred to as 'left submammary pain'.

It is usually caused from minor muscular strains. If you have a touch of anxiety, that will make it seem worse than it is. You should certainly see a doctor to have your heart checked but I hope she will be able to reassure you that all is well.

  • Q. I am a young woman who doesn't know much about sex. My mother passed away some years ago so I have no one to ask. Where is the clitoris that people talk about so much? I can't find mine and I wonder if I was born abnormal.

    A. That is most unlikely. I am sure that you do have a clitoris.

In order to find it, the best thing to do is to get a little hand-mirror and angle it to view the genital organs. You will observe that there are two lips (labia) on either side.

So, there is an outer pair of lips, and an inner pair. Now look for the point at which the two inner lips meet - at the front. Immediately above it is where the clitoris is located.

It is smaller than many people imagine, smaller than a gungo pea, in fact. It is pink and quite well hidden. If by any chance you still cannot find it, have a look at one of the many educational websites which show photographs of exactly where the clitoris is located. For instance, check out www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulva.

  • Q. I am a 19-year-old man. I recently got involved in a threesome with an older woman, who had expressed a desire to go to bed with two young men at the same time. The third person was a guy who is a friend of mine.

This only happened once but I am a little worried about it, Doc. Both of us had sex with this lady, I straight after him. That happened twice. We also had oral sex with her. When we went home, she gave us a little money.

I have been fretting since then. My friend has admitted to me that a few months ago, he had some kind of germ. I am not sure if he got it treated. Is there any possibility that I could have got any kind of infection during this threesome?

    A. Yes, indeed there is. Any kind of casual sexual contact carries a risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). If there are three people involved instead of two, that increases the risk.

If either this woman or your friend has an STI, you would have been exposed to it. Go to a doc or a clinic for a check-up as soon as possible. Don't have sex with anyone until you have been told that you are OK. Also, I would strongly advise you to avoid threesomes in the future. They can lead to trouble.

  • Q. I am a female Gleaner reader in the United States. Recently I have been somewhat depressed so I went to see a doctor here and he put me on some pills. However, he also indicated that he found me really pretty and asked me out for a date. What should I do?

    A. This is outrageous behaviour. Doctors should not ask patients out on dates, especially when the person is depressed and therefore vulnerable!

If this guy were practising in Jamaica, he would be in big trouble with the medical authorities. I am certain that you should have nothing more to do with him. Please find yourself another doctor this week. You need professional help to get you through this period of depression.

  • Q. Doc, after lifting some very heavy weights, I now have pain in the back that runs all the way down to my left ankle. Why?

    A. This strongly suggests that you have a bulging disc in your back and this is pressing on the roots of the nerve which runs down the rear part of your leg. There is a good chance that this will get better, but you must see a doc now for a full clinical assessment.

  • Q. I am more or less a virgin, but last week I let my boyfriend discharge near me. In fact, the semen landed in my pubic hair. Now I am terrified that I might be pregnant. Is that possible, Doc?

    A. It is possible, but highly unlikely. However, if by any chance your menses do not arrive, you should get a pregnancy test. I suggest that you do not allow this young man to do this again, especially if you fear getting pregnant. Always use a condom.

Email questions about sexual and other health matters to saturdaylife@gleanerjm.com and Doc will try to make the right diagnosis.
